The Gibson Midtown custom is a very interesting model in the Gibson guitar lineup. Made in their USA factory it is neither a proper solidbody nor a semi hollow like the ES line. It sits comfortably in the middle thanks to the unique way it is put together.
Interesting Construction
While most semi hollow guitars are made out of 4 sheets of wood that are then shaped and glued together on to a block this is a bit different. For this they have used a solid M@hogany body that has been routed on either side with tone chambering like you see on a lot of modern Les Pauls. The big difference here is that the flat M@ple top has the F holes cut in to it over the chambering so you get the semi hollow look but with the response of a solidbody guitar.
Fast Neck
Just like the body the neck is also made out of Mahog@ny for structural integrity and a great warm sound. This is one of the few semi-hollow guitars that uses a solid slimtaper neck profile that was produced for speed and playability. So even if you are a lover of shred you will be surprised at just how comfortable this guitar is to play.
Traditional Design
Stripped back to what we consider traditional the Midtown Standard is perfect for Gibson purists looking for something new and interesting. With a 2011 style neck profile for a classic feel, traditional tuners and graph tech nut this guitar may not have any high tech gadgetry but it does offer a superb feel with some great tones.
Burstbucker Pickups
Designed with the original 50's and 60's PAF pickups in mind these Burstbuckers capture what we consider to be the classic Gibson sound. This guitar sounds warm and smooth but with a bit more bite than you might expect out of a hollowbody. Partially due to the thick m@hogany body compared to other semi hollow models and partially due to the unbalanced design of the pickups for the perfect midgain tone.
Here's what Gibson say about the USA Midtown custom
The Midtown Standard covers the sonic spectrum, from hard rock to soft jazz with an elegant, upscale design. Ultra-playable and super-stylish, two matched Burstbucker pickups power the big, full sound with its hallmark smooth sustain and tremendous tone.
